Aberdare Cottages is destined to become the finest private getaway cottages in the Aberdare region and will increase the area’s exposure to the domestic tourist market.

Project Location

The cottages are located on a 10 acre wooded farm in the shadows of the Aberdare range, Gacharageini Location, Mathioya Division, Muranga District, which we have already leased from the owner. The area includes a beautiful tropical miniforest complete with abundant birdlife, hundreds of different types of trees and plants, and a small creek complete with natural mini waterfalls and teeming with fish.

Purpose of the Project

Create a recreational retreat lodge-cum-campsite specifically targeting (but not limited to) the local tourist market.

We plan to bring new levels of customer satisfaction not previously experienced by the local domestic tourist. This has been  achieved by introducing high levels of customer service, cuisine and personalized attention, hitherto the preserve of the high spending foreign tourist. This will has also been achieved through the personal involvement of the owners/directors who are all professionals in diverse fields, as well as integrating the employees in the various sections eg cuisine, hospitality and customer service into the operations so that they feel part and parcel of the entity.

Since the setting of  the cottages  is upcountry (in the picture risqué shadows of the Aberedare range), we share the commercial benefits of the venture with the local community. This involves not only procuring the building raw materials and the labour used to put up the cottages from the neighborhood but also sourcing all but the unavailable supplies locally. This includes furniture and furnishings, groceries, fruits and vegetables, and as many other items that can be obtained locally as possible. In this way we have been able to make the surrounding local community feel that they are also benefiting from the venture.

As the site for the cottages is situated within an area blessed with abundant flora and bird life. We plan to blend into the biodiversity by actively promoting eco tourism both within the cottages acreage and also in the surrounding areas. This will have the twin benefit of giving our clients the serenity of a quiet haven as well as giving back to the environment what we take from it.

To this end, we have already set aside part of the leased land as a conservation prototype. The area has a natural forest with many mature giant trees of different species, a small creek, different types of plants and trees, birdlife and fish. The area is still in its original natural state and part of the attraction will be walking along a nature trail within the miniforest.

We have also started an intensive flower and horticulture project on the adjacent farm.  The flowers are for the export market while the various horticultural items are for the local market. Since we have a qualified farm supervisor, it has been an opportunity for us to impact professional farming methods on the local community, as the flower and horticulture farm has become a classroom for the whole village to learn modern faming methods at no cost to them. Most of the fresh green produce consumed in the lodge is also organically grown here with the option of directly picking your preferred vegetables for dinner!

Market Analysis

The Cottages  focus on quality, semi luxurious, yet affordable, accommodation for vacationers.

very many families who would like to go out together for the weekends or holidays but they are always put off by a variety of factors. These include expensive destinations, family unfriendly hotels and lack of excitement in the facilities visited, especially for people not visiting the coast.

Aberdare cottages to fill this gap. The cottages have the homely feeling of "Home away from Home". Each cottage is self contained enabling each family to get the privacy they might need while still enabling them to interact with other families in the common dining /lounge areas. The cuisine ise homely, allowing the guests to have an input in what they would like to eat at a particular mealtime. Since this is in area with abundant farm food, the guests will be treated to daily farm fresh food (eggs, chicken, fruits and vegetables).

The extracurricular activities (at no extra cost)are also  family oriented. These  include outdoor games such as volleyball, basketball, tennis and mountain bikes. A swimming pool will also be added in the next phase. For the not so physically active, there are indoor games such as pool, chess monopoly and video games for the kids.
